Such as life...moving fastly-forward. Not enough time to really comprehend the moments and experiences. Thank God we are equipped with the ability to pull out moments from our memory and savor them when all is quiet.
Lately I've had a few ill-struck glimpses in the mirror and noticed a tired, older, me staring back. I immediately make promises to myself {and to whomever else is present at that moment} "Oh dear, I need to exercise" or "I'm going to start eating more nutritiously", but overall I haven't taken myself up on any of these promises/ideas/good intentions.
A few days ago we went for a family walk/hike through the woods to a nearby play park. After grumbling and complaining about the heat I convinced the family to turn back to the air-conditioned home.
Then, again this morning we ventured through the woods...
I feel so revived and recharged...
I always wondered {before having a lot of children} how parents with a lot of children were able to spread their love between so many...
I never realised that the more children we have, the more love we gain. My heart seems too big for my body at times...
We're amidst a heat wave here and it is making for crazy weather.
The last few nights we've had severe-weather-storms including the sighting of a tornado in our town...yikes! I happened to be at work and recieved an automated-emergency call warning that a tornado was spotted close by and to take shelter.
This was so scary...{although I suppose prior warning is always more desirable than say:earthquakes that show up unexpectedly} Anyhow, I didn't take it well, I freaked out{mostly because I couldn't get ahold of my husband and the kids} and we evacuated about 25 customers into the basement of the coffee shop and sang "Wagon wheel" while the more extreme-weather-experienced co-workers stayed upstairs and watched for the tornado.
Thank God that night is just a memory now...

Due to the warm weather we've been finding family-fun acivities to do indoors.
One of my recent yard-sale purchases was a fondu set. It is so pretty and so nice {$10...seriously}.
We decided since it's still almost 90 degrees at night time here, we'd do smores indoors.

The Daniel Fast by Susan Gregory

"Feed your soul, strengthen your spirit, and renew your body".

Before I received this {complimentary} book from the Tyndale House Publishers I had no previous intentions in participating in the Daniel fast...I'll skip to the chase and let you know that I have my calendar marked "fast begins" right under January 1 of the New Year.

Susan Gregory not only enthusiastically convinced me that this would be a fantastic idea for me to engage in, but she also guided me step by step on how to prepare for the fast.

This is really important because most of us don't know how to fast and some of us don't know that fasting is not all about food. Susan adds that the definition of a biblical fast is "to restrict food for a spiritual purpose". In addition to changing eating habits or restricting food, fasting has to have a spiritual face, otherwise it's just a diet.

Susan has also shed light on the aspects of fasting that most of us are not familiar with and she has spent a lot of time giving facts and quoting scripture.

She tells Daniel's story and explains which certain foods are restricted and why.

I also love the easy-to-follow biology lessons that she throws in there just to remind us of what our bodies are doing and why.

From my previous experiences with fasting I know firsthand that it's not easy to complete a fast, but Susan Gregory has written this book to ensure a successful Daniel Fast {surmising you follow her instruction}.

She gives you ample resources and suggestions on how to fully prepare yourself mentally and physically.

"Failing to prepare is preparing to fail"...and with Susan Gregory's help, I'll be partaking in the Daniel Fast and am eager to experience a renewal in the spirit of my mind.

I highly recommend getting the the extended version-copy of this book which includes a 21 day Daniel fast devotional.

You can also find Susan Gregory's blog here

Happy fasting!

Living in Va. for the winter gives me mixed feelings. I really love that I'm still able to get out for a walk everyday and usually it's motivation that keeps me indoors not the weather.
I am a layers person so the weather here is perfect for it! I love that I'm not so bundled that I can't move {with our previous Adirondack winters, bundled is an understatement}
With all this said I do miss the snow...
Maybe this rain will turn to snow at some point during the week! That would be fun...
Anyhow, I found this fun video and wanted to share it!
It's winterly appropriate and even for all of us not-so-cold-climated-people ...at least we can still wear a scarf...
Enjoy!
I have so many new things I want to do. I've started a couple new books, a couple new projects, and I'm feeling overwhelmingly eager to start anew.
I will be moving house in four months too so that will take a lot of organizing and planning.
Organizing seems to be at the top of my New Years resolution list...
I'm not only interested in temporarily getting organized, I want to stay clutter-free, tidy, and organized for good...from here and out...
I know I keep mentioning this getting organized thing, it's because I'm really serious about it this year. I don't want to own anything that I don't really need...and if I don't really need it than I'd better really like it...plain and simple!

Speaking of like...here are my picks for the week:

I'm testing it out for a few days and if I really like it, I'll tell you about it and how to get it {for half price shhh}.
This is going to be a family gift this year...I'll probably draw in a few of my own ideas too!
"How to behave and why" by Monroe Leaf for Anthropologie
Angelahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08132963215157092148noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5940232153590543385.post-81262229302713155492011-11-30T21:39:00.000-08:002011-12-13T15:42:35.021-08:00To Cloth or not to Cloth...
Let me start by saying-- right out of the gate-- cloth diapering has been one of the smartest parenting decisions I've ever made!

We used main-stream-brand disposables with no.1 {Huggies, Pampers}

We halfheartedly cloth diapered no. 2, We used the G-diaper system {was fresh out on the market}. I wasn't so into it, but I loved how cute those little diapers with the "g" on the butt looked...we ended up using all natural disposables {mixed with a few packages of the Cosco brand in between}.

We more than halfheartedly cloth diapered no. 3, but we still used disposables in between. Also our no. 3 was potty-trained by 18 or 19 months so that helped...

We exclusively cloth diaper no. 4 and wouldn't ever go any other way... SO MUCH MONEY is being saved here in the Zere household, as well as waste AND we haven't had any diaper rash on this baby's bottom.

All the chemicals in the disposable diapers scare the daylights out of me.
Most disposable diapers are bleached with chlorine which causes a byproduct called dioxin which leaches into the diapers...and our environment, According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), dioxins are among the most toxic chemicals known to science and are listed by the EPA as highly carcinogenic chemicals. According to the W.H.O.{World Health Organization} exposure to dioxins can cause skin reactions and can cause damage to liver function, immune system, nervous system, endocrine system and reproductive functions.
Thanks Huggies for making those diapers white {for what reason?} AND knowingly, subjecting our baby's vulnerable skin to these extremely harmful chemicals.
Oh, and that's not all...there's sodium polycarbonate {the gel beads you find on your baby's bottom when changing him}...known to cause respiratory complications. Let's not forget tributyl-tin {TBT} which according to research published by the American Institute of Biological Sciences, tributyl-tin can trigger genes that promote the growth of fat cells, causing obesity in humans...hmmmm. Well, unfortunately the list goes on... volatile organic compounds {V.O.C.s}, dyes, fragrances, plastics and petrolatums, adhesive chemicals.
I don't know about you, but I think us Moms have enough to worry about when it comes to our children.
I think the biggest negative response I hear about cloth diapering {C.D.} is "I just don't have the time" or "I can't fathom the hassle". For no. 4 we use "pocket diapers" by Just Simply Baby. Basically you add an insert into a hidden pocket at the back of the diaper and then the rest is pretty much the same as a disposable {except mine have snaps not velcro...much better in my opinion}. Also my diapers grow with baby! So they can expand just by using/not using a row of snaps.
There is one more C.D. myth I'd love to bust while I'm at it:
"cloth diapering uses just as many if not more environmental resources {water, energy} than disposables do"
No, absolutely not.
You don't really have to pre-soak or deal with diaper pails, AND most Moms sun dry their diapers to get more life out of them {the ones that don't most likely have a semi up-to-date dryer that will save energy anyway}.
That leaves very little room for argument considering the amount of energy alone it takes to produce, package, and ship disposables...that's before even putting them on baby, then there's the rest...disposal, land fill and everything in between.
I am so happy to have made this decision before no. 4 arrived! I'm also so happy that I found Just Simply Baby Cloth Diapers.

I really find these diapers easy- peasy and they will last until baby is out of diapers {quality and size-wise}. I also love how the JSB {Just Simply Baby} offers packages. Especially for someone just starting out or someone adding to their stash...
I couldn't be happier with the quality, service and selection that JSB offers.

Let's have some fun...
Check out JSB's website here {or through any of the links above}

I'm thinking of a number from 1 to 10...leave me a comment at the bottom of this post telling me what you think of JSB diapers and whoever ends up having that number comment...we'll give you a 10% off code to use for a JSB diaper purchase.

Have fun...and don't forget to let JSB know that Angela Zere sent ya!

I'll post the winner Friday morning!
Well, I need to make this clear...I'm not an irresponsible shopper.

I don't just sit and wait for the mega, giant, flat screen {is that what they still call them?} to hit $500 dollars and then pounce on it like kitty...no I will probably never own one of those TVs {I said "probably"}, BUT we do really need a new laptop so what better time...we've actually needed one for a while now, but we thought we would be responsible and wait for a deal.

So we'll be trying to score some kind of a great deal today.

Here are some fun Cyber Monday things I found:
I was actually out shopping earlier today , but didn't stay long and was not at all impressed with the so called "deals" that this overrated event stands for. I've always dreaded the idea of being at one these events and after today I've decided for sure that this is not something for me. Anyhow I hope that all of you that partook in the B.F. adventures, had a great time, stayed safe and found some amazing deals. As for me, I'll stick to getting excited over the handmades and baking supplies...yes, I really do get excited about brown sugar and butter!
Here are my pick for the week...enjoy!

This is a great book!

Way back when "skirts were long and hats were tall" Americans were forgetting Thanksgiving, and nobody seemed to care!

Not until Sarah Hale, came along and demanded that we have our turkey and eat it too!

She wrote letters to every president spanning a 30 year period to persuade him to make it a national holiday, but nobody budged...not until honest Abraham Lincoln received one {or maybe a few} of Sarah's letters in 1863. That's when Thanksgiving became the important event it is today.

In the book the cartoonish illustrations are well-done, and they use warm hues that are reminiscent of the warmth associated with Thanksgiving.

Sara Hale, the "super hero" and her secret weapon "the pen" are responsible for saving Thanksgiving...so let it be known!

Thank You Sarah!
Leather, sterling, old jewelry and found objects, are also re-purposed to make re-imagined "jewels", for people with imagination.

This is a very easy and fun project...and it comes out beautifully! I got the idea from Jones Design Co. Here's how to do it yourself:

No. 1 Things you need:

What do we do with all that candy? I CANNOT imagine my children eating ALL Of THAT!!!

Well, here's an idea...think abstract art.
You can print out any ol' coloring page or use a coloring book. Instead of using crayons, fill the pages with candy!
It's nice to let the kids pick out 10-15 pieces to keep, you take your cut, and then let their imaginations soar with the remaining. You may need a little Elmer's glue, but most of the candy will just press into the paper.

The sticky taffy and chewy candy is the worst for their teeth, but the best for a masterpiece!

With Thanksgiving coming up...decorate a turkey print-out! We did this one year for a kindergarten project. The more candy the better! We even used a candy bracelet as the turkey's wattle...ha!

Happy decorating...

"This treat is for you, we hope you enjoy
The idea is simple, one we hope you employ
You pass "BOO" along to two other neighbors
Along with any kind of Halloween favors
If we all do our part and spread the good cheer
by Halloween night it will be very clear
We're a friendly bunch, we like to share fun
So please do your part to keep "BOO" on the run."

BOO!

This is the second year in a row that we've been "BOOED" and we've had a lot of fun with it!!
We still don't know who "BOOED" us both years, but we have a good idea...

Directions:

Gather some Halloween treats (candy, pencils, toys, books, or just about anything) put it in a Halloween bucket or bag. Print out directions here and place a copy in with the treats. Now watch how fast all the neighbors' doors end up "BOOED"
1 1/4 cups of whole wheat white flour (unbleached of course)
1/2 cup quick oats
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup sugar
1 stick of butter (you know it!) save the wrapper to butter your pan
1/2 teaspoon of molasses
1/2 teaspoon of baking soda
1/2 teaspoon of salt
*1 egg
1/2 cup chocolate chips (the darker the better...in my opinion)
1 dash of cinnamon (optional)

*If you don't want to use egg you can substitute 1 tbs of flax meal mixed with 3 tbs of warm water. Let the mix sit for about 3 minutes to thicken.

( I don't like to preheat, but you can) Oven temp- 375. Butter your baking sheet with your saved butter wrapper. (You really don't need any more butter than that or your cookies will get too crispy).
In a medium bow add softened stick of butter, with both sugars and mix. Add egg and molasses. In another large mixing bowl add the remaining dry ingredients minus the chips, stir well. Now combine bowl 1 with 2. Mix well. You can add the chips now.
Ok drop spoonfuls of the dough onto your baking sheet. I usually get a dozen cookies a batch. Each batch should cook for about 6 minutes. This is the most important part: Take the cookies out right before the edges turn golden brown. They won't feel done, but use a metal spatula to transfer them to a plate to cool. Once they cool they will be so chewy and yummy and good...Yields about 24, but depends on how much cookie dough you eat...hehe

Enjoy!
